About

Hello, I’m Rockell, a self-taught home cook and baker from Vancouver Island, now living in the Fraser Valley. Fair warning: I’m completely, embarrassingly head over heels in love with food.

My parents own a motorcycle shop, and I had this idea as a young girl about opening a little café inside it, somewhere customers could grab a sandwich, a cookie, or a hot bowl of soup while they waited. That idea stuck around long enough to inspire a handmade cookbook, which I gave out as Christmas presents that year. A real café never happened, but that feeling never went anywhere.

Feeding people was always the idea, one way or another. My Oma was one of the most influential cooks in my life. She was from Föhr, a small island off the northern coast of Germany, and she made her home in Victoria, right on the water. She was a beautiful, opinionated woman with the biggest heart you’d ever find. She was a painter, mostly watercolours of the world just outside her window, and she brought that same creativity into the kitchen. Everything she made was from scratch, always. When I was small, sleepovers at her house meant something freshly baked waiting for me and afternoons spent painting side by side. She never measured anything. She just knew.

I cook the same way, honestly. Sometimes I look at what’s in the fridge, pick a direction, and see what happens. I am the queen of winging it. I have been ever since I was a teenager. Sometimes you just have to take a chance, because when it works, it really works. The kind of bite that stops people mid-conversation and has them asking “what is IN this?” And when it doesn’t? You can really taste the effort.

Not every meal starts that way, though. I have a binder stuffed with printed recipes, dog-eared and sauce-stained, that’s been growing for years. Every recipe in there earned its spot. At Rockell’s Kitchen, you’ll find comfort food, family recipes, and baked goods. The kind of hearty homemade cooking that fills a kitchen with something worth coming home to. This blog is the next version of that binder, a home for the recipes that actually work, with the stories that go with them. Made for the people closest to me, and now for you too.

When you visit Rockell’s Kitchen, I hope it feels like dropping in on a friend. Bella is my dog, my sous chef, and the kitchen’s official cleanup crew, always underfoot and always hoping something falls. Technically I do the cooking, but she handles quality control and brings the kind of cosy, quiet energy that makes a kitchen feel truly alive. Bella and I are usually singing and dancing our way through whatever’s on the menu this week, and honestly, I’m not sure who’s more excited about dinner.

Consider this your standing invitation to come hungry and make yourself at home. We hope you find something you love, and that it brings you back for seconds.
